5. From my experience I

know such persons can

generally

be obtained from either the Training School for Nurses attached to the London Hospital or St. Bartholomew's Hospital.

4. Great inconveniences

may arise from Changes in the Nursing Staff of a hospital so far away

from the source of supply

would recommend that these

Nurses be engaged for at least

three

years

and that

they should be provided with a free passage to Hong Kong

and

a free return passage under the ordinary rules of the Service; the circumstances I submit that

under

any other cause

except that of sickness, resignation previous to the expiration of the term of the

engagement

should not

be permitted.

5. It will be noticed that I

propose to have

more

Nurses

than we have

at present attached to the Hospital. I do this because the number

of patients admitted, particularly into the Private Ward, is exceedingly increasing as shown by returns

forwarded in

my letter No. 97

of 26th ultimo, dealing with the subject of the extension of the Hospital.

6. I think it probable that

Nurses

may

be obtained at

salaries ranging in the case of the Head Nurse from $60 rising to $80 per mensem, and in the case of the others from $40 rising to $60

per mensem, the Government providing uniform, board, and lodging

and attendance

as at present.
